Learn how to balance chemical equations by practicing on fruit! Add and remove bundles of fruit so that each animal gets an equal amount. Learn more!
We decided to do a game on balancing chemical equations because we wanted something related to chemistry that was bite-sized and easy to turn into a game. Balancing chemical equations is tedious and sometimes frustrating when you're doing it on paper and just learning. There are different numbers next to weird chemical names and it's just a generally unwelcoming experience.
To help ease the pain, we took a page from DragonBox's book and started kids off with something that was seemingly unrelated to the process: sorting fruit. The game eventually introduces subscript numbers and chemical symbols.
Bongo Balance ended up teaching several coworkers how to balance equations, as most of them had forgotten how to do it or struggled with it in middle school. It's ridiculously simple but still offers a fun challenge.
A Lesson Learned...
We originally had the animals say lots of random comments and dialogs to add some humor and interest. Everyone hated it. It was annoying, unhelpful, and their dialog boxes took up space players wanted to use to sort their fruit. We cut out most of it and everyone's much happier!
