As with Fossil Forensics, a small team of us were tasked with revisiting this game to make improvements. Some of the fixes were tricky interfaces, dialogs that needed to be cut down, and some confusing levels.
This game is long one with tons of dialog and a very specific series of triggers and actions that make up the game's flow. Making changes to this game was akin to performing a delicate surgery. We couldn't make radical changes, so we had to tweak elements here and there to get what we wanted.
We cut a couple rooms, moved some around, and streamlined the interface. Every time a change was made, the dialog needed to be checked that it still made sense. There was no up-to-date spreadsheet of all the dialog and triggers (and other game text, such as the ever-changing objective at the top of the screen), so I had to play through the whole game to record all that information and make sure it was accurate. This was super helpful and made it really easy to see the narrative as a whole.
A Lesson Learned...
When we started working on the game, there weren't any tester cheats to quickly jump to different parts. Every time I needed to check something in a later level, I had to play through the whole thing. We eventually created some cheats, but it would have been way more convenient to prioritize them higher.
