This was one of my first projects and was also one we revisited a couple times. The entire game is one big system that the player is managing, so it had to be designed so that the player is doing most of the balancing themselves as they go. Our first version of the game involved a time limit and lots of clicking on different parts of the plant to absorb and use resources.
After much feedback from players, we decided that it would be best to offer a Strategy Mode. This way, players can take their time and really think about their choices without having to keep up with the game's fast pace. Strategy Mode was a hit. It uses all the same mechanics but is turn-based.
This is one of the most beautiful games we have. All parts of the plant can sway and grow, the music sets the perfect ambiance, and it is all around gorgeous. Reach for the Sun is a game that ended up having it all.
A Lesson Learned...
We wanted to teach what resources plants use to grow and what processes happen to help them flower and fruit. The game is successful because we matched its systems to the real life systems of plants. A learning game is most successful when its systems and mechanics are derived from the subject's.
