SQUARE PANDA BUBBLES
This bubble popping game for Square Panda aims to help young children identify letters and learn their names and sounds. Players spell small words and receive audio and visual feedback to guide them. They interact with the game by placing real letters in a physical tray designed by Square Panda, and they pop rewarding bubbles by tapping the screen. Learn more!
The design behind this game was more involved than it seemed on the surface. We're dealing with small children who have complete freedom to mess with the physical letters in the device itself in any way they want at any point in gameplay.
We started by thinking of as many hypothetical situations as possible: what if they place letters upside down? What if they move a letter to a different slot? What if they place an incorrect letter? What if they take a previously correct letter out? What if they do this when they're supposed to be popping bubbles?...etc.
All these cases had to be dealt with while also making sure that we always gave immediate, clear visual and audio feedback instructing the players what to do.
A Lesson Learned...
When working with a peripheral that gives players greater freedom than a purely digital game, overestimate everything and keep scope tighter. There are many unexpected ways a player could choose to interact with the game!
