SQUARE PANDA JIGGITY JAMBLE
This is the third game we created for Square Panda. It's designed to teach young children how to recognize the letters and their sounds. The game goes through different kinds of prompts where it can ask the player to find a letter by name, sound, and by sight. Each letter placement triggers a set of singing and dancing by the animals which the player is encouraged to do as well. Learn more!
It was a challenge to make the lyrics for this game because we wanted them to be silly, catchy, and be a good vehicle for dancing alphabet letters. We came up with some lyrics and dances for each letter, such as "Bring your arms up and make some muscles like the M." It took some back-and-forth with Square Panda to finally settle on the silly word we wanted: jiggity jamble. Kids love crazy made-up words in songs and, by golly, we were going to have one in ours!
This game originally had the player only placing one letter in a word (the animals would spell out the rest of the letters,) but this seemed a bit confusing because we wanted the entire word to be reflected in the game tray. The player is placing physical letters in the Square Panda device, and having them only see one letter there is not as powerful as them seeing the entire word.
A Lesson Learned...
The lyrics take up quite a bit of time because of the amount of song lyrics there are and how often they repeat. This is something we could have paid more attention to early on while writing them to make sure that there's not too much of a lull in gameplay while the characters sing.
