SQUARE PANDA MONSTER RHYMES
This is our second children's game for Square Panda! Players learn how to create rhymes by filling words in at the end of rap lyrics. Two monsters face off in a rap battle, but one monster needs the player's help. The game guides the player towards creating a rhyming word. Learn more!
This game required a lot of spreadsheet and database management. We had the sets of lyrics and all the words that the child should be exposed to. We sorted the words according to rhyme category and specified which words could appear at the end of the first monster's rhyme. It was a bit more complex than this, but that's the gist of what we did.
There was an issue for a while where the second rhyming word (at the end of the second monster's rhyme line) made the phrase inappropriate somehow. It was hilarious, but a big no-no for a children's game! This was because the game pulled in the specified rhyme for the first line, and the player could choose any rhyming word for the second line. We had to manually comb through all the word/lyric pairs and make sure that those combinations could never happen. Thank goodness we playtested the game and encountered some of the naughty combinations, otherwise I wouldn't have even thought to check those.
A Lesson Learned...
When designing a game that can generate its own combinations of things, such as words and sentences and such, playtest it a lot. There will usually be some sort of weird combination of elements that doesn't give you the desired results, and it's better that you catch it early before a player does.
