Working on this project was a real learning experience. Everyone on the team had to have an understanding of how sound bends underwater and how it's read by sonar operators. It took a while for us to wrap our heads around what exactly happens to sound when it encounters different temperatures and such. Luckily we had many talks with our client, who is an expert in the field and taught us everything we needed to know.
There are different ways to visualize sonar and sound. Submarines have their own set of displays, but there are also certain kinds of charts and visuals that, while not used in the field, can be used in this digital experience to help players build a picture of what's happening. We spent a lot of time working on creating an informative interface that wasn't overwhelming.
A Lesson Learned...
Before making any kind of learning game, throw yourself into research on the topic. Don't trust what you think you remember from school. Verify!
